Pickleball Court Etiquette

Please read and familiarize yourself with the following guidelines, so that we can all share this space in a peaceful and respectful manner.

  1. Remember, pickleball is ONLY a game. You are here to have fun! Any bullying, harassment, and/or other inappropriate behaviors will not be tolerated.

  2. A warm-up prior to playing is highly recommended; this will decrease the possibility of injuries.

  3. Age, experience, physical condition and athletic ability will impact the level of your game; don’t try to make plays beyond your abilities.

  4. The pickleball lines in the VIU gym are green.

  5. When moving onto the courts, please wait until play has stopped on adjacent court and then walk at the back of the court or around the playing area to get to your court. Do not try to squeeze between the two nets to get to your court.

  6. If your ball rolls onto the adjacent occupied court, DO NOT chase after it. Immediately yell “BALL!”, wait for play to stop and for the ball to be returned.

  7. If a ball comes onto your court from the adjacent court, STOP PLAY at once to return the ball.

  8. Never walk behind an active court; it is dangerous and could disrupt players.

  9. Help us keep our courts safe. Place personal items under or on the chairs in the gym.

  10. Try to keep the noise level down both on and off court. Loud conversations can be distracting to players.

  11. Help keep our courts clean. Only WATER is permitted in the gym.

  12. If you want to consume snacks on campus, we invite you to use the Student Common Area outside the gym. Check out Food For Thought Café for more options!

  13. Take all food product waste home and keep all other garbage left at the gym to a minimum.

  14. The gym is a scent-free zone.

  15. Respect and take care of courts and all equipment.

  16. Help us save on energy costs. Always check and turn off lights if you are the last person to exit the gym.

Pickleball Attire

  1. Appropriate footwear (non-marking athletic shoes) is required.

  2. Clean indoor court shoes. Change into court shoes once you are inside the gym; do not wear them in from the car. Participants found NOT changing shoes will lose court privileges.

  3. Shirts must be worn; no shirts with offensive wording/logos.

  4. Protective eyewear is highly recommended. Eye protection is mandatory for all junior players.
